For me it has to do with control and creativity. I have read thousands of books in my lifetime, and there are always a few that leave me thinking "I wish it ended this way" or "I wish this had happened a long the way".
I love writing because I can control my characters (most of the time). There are times when a character simply chooses to create his/her own destiny (such as Chris Anderson in The Ghost of You). When that happens, I simply go with it. I love being able to share my stories with readers who will "get it" and fall in love with my characters.
