Dear Lisa See, One of my biggest dreams is becoming a writer and next year I will attend the literature university .I am a girl full of dreams, who talks to angels and plays with the stars. I write poems ,but I truly want to write novels. I wanted to ask you , when did you start writing ?
Lisa See
I would have been about 21 when I got my first magazine assignment. I went to school for two years, took two years off, and came back. When I came back from Europe, my mother helped me get my first two assignments. The first was a giveaway article for sports, and the other was one for a magazine she didn’t want to write…I can’t even remember what they paid, but it was something like a nickel a word. It was not very much, but it gave me tear sheets and something for me to show, and to prove that I could meet a deadline. It certainly couldn’t pay the rent, but those things were worth the time that I put in.
I wish you the best of luck in all of your writing endeavors Elda!

Hello Ms See, I have just finished reading your two books, "Shanghai Girls" and "Dreams of Joy" and enjoyed both tremendously. They depict the changes that occurred in China from the pre-to post-revolution beautifully. I have always been interested in China having been close to Pearl Buck who was the first American writer to write about that country. I'd love to know what you think of her books? Eva F.

One of the many elements I enjoyed in China Dolls, an element that made this novel stand out from your previous works, was the great emotional depth of your male characters (particularly Eddie.) Why do you think this story lent to a deeper exploration of your heroines' male counterparts? Thanks for being a magnificent woman!

Some 20 years ago, I lived and worked in Fukuoka, Japan. There was lots of excitement about the 'King of Na gold seal' (more information here: http://www.digplanet.com/wiki/King_of_Na_gold_seal). I visited the excavation site and was moved by the mystery of the place and of the seal, engraved with 漢委奴國王. I wonder if you would ever consider writing a tale touching on this Han dynasty mystery?
