I had the pleasure of hearing you speak a few years back and you said that wherever you traveled, people always asked you about Bertie. How do you explain his popularity and people's concern for and connection to him?

Alexander McCall Smith Bertie seems to be a universal type - the small boy who suffers from too much parental pushiness. He just wants to be a boy - not a project. I think people respond to that plight.
