Does anyone know what inspired Bram Stoker to write this book and any other books in the horror genre?

I cannot say for sure since I am not Stoker myself but there have been quite a few critics who have claimed that Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's novella, ''Carmilla'', was the source of inspiration for ''Dracula''. I can only conjecture that other classic vampire short stories and novels that predated Stoker's creation might have, also, played a role such as ''Varney The Vampire''. The historical figure of Vlad The Impaler formed the basis for the novel known as ''Dracula'' although Stoker only had a very vague idea about who he was and what he had done.
