Kristen asked Kelley Armstrong:

I'm reading City of the Lost and loving it! My question is about some of the Canadian references [like Leafs vs. Habs, & Mr. Dressup in part 3]. Do you plan these out in advance or do they just occur to you in the moment when you are writing? Either way, they're great I'm just curious about how they happen. Thanks!

Kelley Armstrong Those references always come up as I'm writing. With these particular ones, when my agent shopped the book to a US publisher, I actually removed them. Canadian cultural references can be considered "difficult" for a US audience (that's conventional wisdom, which I disagree with.) So I removed them for the purpose of selling the book so it wouldn't seem "too Canadian" :) After it sold, I edited the complete version (with those references back in) We'll see if the publisher leaves them or suggests they be removed ;) They'll stay in the Canadian and UK version (the UK has no such problem with Canadian cultural references.)
