If you could live in another time period, when would it be? Why?

Isabel Allende Although I enjoy researching the past for my novels, I wouldn't like to live in any other era but the present and, if given a choice, I would like to live in the future. People have this nostalgic idea that the past was better, maybe that it was more tranquil, refined and romantic, but the truth is that tranquility, refinement and romanticism were privileges of the wealthy only; most folks had very hard lives. I have been a feminist since I was a kid, so the situation of women has always been an issue for me. Never before have women had more rights, opportunities and freedom than today, although that's no to say that feminism has achieved all its goal. Not by a long shot. In many places in the world still women and girls are abused, exploited, and sold into premature marriage, forced labor and prostitution, but at least there is global awareness and we are working to improve their plight. That was not the case before. Even in the enlightened classical Greece women were property of men. In my lifetime I have seen improvement in the world and I assume that given the technological and scientific advancements that today are available to the majority of people, the future will be better. In the past any substantial change would take decades, even centuries. Today, thanks to information, education and communications change can happen much faster. I envy my grandchildren that will be in the world in 2050!!

A pesar de que me gusta investigar el pasado para mis novelas, no quisiera vivir en ninguna otra época más que la presente y, si pudiera elegir, quisiera vivir en el futuro. La gente tiene una idea nostálgica de que todo tiempo pasado fue mejor, tal vez que fue más apacible, refinado y romántico, pero la verdad es que la tranquilidad, el refinamiento y el romanticismo eran privilegios de los ricos; la mayoría de la gente tenía vida muy duras. He sido feminista desde que era niña, así es que la situación de las mujeres siempre me ha importado mucho. Nunca antes las mujeres han tenido más derechos, oportunidades y libertad que ahora, aunque eso no significa que el feminismo haya alcanzado todas sus metas. ¡De ninguna manera! En muchos lugares del mundo todavía las niñas y las mujeres sufren abuso y explotación, son vendidas en matrimonio prematuro, trabajo forzado y prostitución, pero al menos existe conciencia al respecto y estamos luchando por mejorar su suerte. Antes no era así. Incluso en la ilustrada Grecia clásica, las mujeres eran propiedad de los hombres. En el transcurso de mi vida he visto que el mundo progresa y supongo que con los avances tecnológicos y científicos, que ahora están al alcance de la mayoría, el futuro será mejor. En el pasado los cambios demoraban décadas y hasta siglos en producirse. Hoy, gracias a la información, educación y comunicación, los cambios suceden mucho más rápido. Envidio a mis nietos que estarán en el mundo en el año 2050.
