Joshua and Maaya - I read widely and well when I was young and frankly, now that I have had more life experience and education, I find those very same books take on a new depth and power. Books that I simply rolled my eyes at have now become rich, insightful gifts. Persepctive certainly changes as one ages. Perhaps you will grow into this powerful fable about falling from grace. Keep reading, keep growing and enjoying good books. - Ginn, In Sunny SC

I read this 3.5 years ago, when I was in high school. It took me 3 busy days to read this book, and, till today, this is my favorite book (I think I should re-read it before deciding that it is better than all other novels that I have read). Is this an unavoidable fact that, someone's favorite book can be the least favorite of another ?

This novel is anything but boring. However, you have to know what there is to appreciate in it (as some people may find museums boring and not "get" Picasso). It may be hard for a young person who has not gone through the struggles of getting a job and establishing a home and family to appreciate this novel. For someone who has been through some of that, the first half of the novel might read like mere description of traditional customs of some foreign culture. One has to get to the second half of the novel, then one appreciates in amazement the significance of all the details in the first half. The second half of the novel is swift, page-turning, and visceral. Ultimately this is a universal story. You will feel rewarded and enthralled by the end of this amazing novel, and if you are at the right stage in life, hopefully you will gain some new perspective on your own place in society and what it is to be human.

I don't know how you could possibly miss the plot in this work. To call it boring is to call the Igbo peoples' greatest struggle boring.
I'd recommend re-reading it a few years after high school...of your own volition. It's easy to roll your eyes at a book when it's assigned to you by an English teacher. I found Things Fall Apart particularly insightful, subtly humorous, and elegantly written.

If you are reading it, you can answer that question for yourself.

Damn overrated. Burn when done

The buzz about the school where my son attends and will be reading this later this year is that the kids thought it would "suck" but it didn't. They really liked it. Go into it with an open mind and report back what you think when you finish. :D I am reading it now - just started.

Boring no, but absolutely devoid of love and compassion.

Part I can be considered boring, but Part II and Part III will have you turn pages. You would also appreciate Part I.

I think if you looked at it as a for-fun read you might like it more than I did. My teacher forced us to overanalyze every single detail of this book to the point where it was boring and unenjoyable for me. I liked it at first but when the heavy analysis assignments kicked in I lost all interest. Most of my classmates agree. If you want to actually get something out of it read it out of class on your own

I already finished the book. It is a pretty good book and I definitely recommend it.

I read it at 16 in school and hated it. Came back to it years later, and really understood it and enjoyed it. Lot to be said for school programs that have their students read books that they cannot appreciate at their time of life.

Approaching any book as a chore is setting yourself up to dislike it. That is even truer when the book comes from a culture which may be quite different than one with which you are familiar. Give it a chance. You just might come to love it! There are books I hated when I first encountered them--often as school required reading--which have become some of my favorites. A Confederacy of Dunces, Catch-22, and The Razor's Edge all come to mind as examples.

I had to read this book for Language Arts class and I found it extremely boring. Sorry... :(

Yes, this book is boring. If you're reading it from a Western perspective you will find it does not match the traditional plot structures you're used to, and although the story within is both very good and enlightening about the struggles of the Ibo, it simply is not an exciting read.
