Michelle So true! And books which seemed hopelessly irrelevant when I was in high school now have an uncanny ability to describe the present. If it seems boring now, please follow Virginia's advice and give it another try in 4, 10 or 20 years!

Maaya I understand what you're saying. The good point about this book was that it showcased intolerance for different beliefs (In this case, the missionaries started to collapse the structure of the clans). However, I usually like to read epics such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata as well as other stories of colonization. The plot and struggles told through those tales are so interweaving and intricate that when teachers present this to me I have trouble seeing it in as a favorable light as they do. I guess my earlier comment came across as too shallow, but I did understand the point of the novel and the idea it was trying to display. Maybe it was the way it was written that didn't appeal to me *shrugs*.

Bruce So true. I read "Jude the Obscure" in my 20's and hated it. Am now 60, read it again about a year ago, and loved it. Same book. Different person.
