The TV show went one direction and the books went another. It's kind of like there's two different universes where Dexter exists. I'm not going to get into spoilers, but if something happens to one of the characters in the TV show, it's probably not going to happen in the book and vice versa. Both the book series and the TV show introduced new characters and in those cases there was no crossover at all.(less)
