The books are very different from the show so it would be a good idea to read them. A lot of the characters have different (sometimes darker) personalities, fates and secrets.

Book 7 and 8 are really one book. If you don't read book 7 then you'll be lost for a good portion of 8. Other than that you could probably read the other 6 out of order without much problem.

I have only read books 1-7 so I can't speak to book 8 yet. However, the books are much better than the series (and I loved the series). You get to know Dexter's personality much more in the books.

The first season of the TV show was based on the first book, but after that, the similarities pretty much end. The TV show went one direction and the books went another. It's kind of like there's two different universes where Dexter exists. I'm not going to get into spoilers, but if something happens to one of the characters in the TV show, it's probably not going to happen in the book and vice versa. Both the book series and the TV show introduced new characters and in those cases there was no crossover at all.

The series are not as dark as the books. If you thought the tv serie was bizar, the books are way more obscure. I think If the books were turned into a movie it would be so very scarry and bizar......... People have different roles in the books comparered to the series. If you read the books you will have to forget about the tv.
