We all see art of any kind (cinema, paintings, literature) through the filter of our background, experiences and beliefs. So if the lens symbolises the mother to you, then it does. I can't say I see it that way; to me the lens is the source of a kind of vital power he was seeking to channel, a strength he didn't have in himself. But that's just my interpretation.
