Ana Faithe
Ana Faithe asked Gail Carriger:

Hello Gail! Love your books! I've read Finishing School series, Prudence, and just finished Soulless. And while I can relate to many characters in your books, I could tell from the first few pages Rue and I were very similar in our thinking. So my question is, what was it like getting into her head? What inspired her thought process? Was there an “Ah ha!” moment when creating her?

Gail Carriger Yes! I totally had a revelation with Rue. Every main character I write by going through a bit of myself. So for Alexia I used my practical scientific adult side. For Sophronia I tried to remember what is was lake as a more introverted observational teen. Rue took me a bit, and then I realized she's the part of me that gets ridiculously excited about food and clothing, and who charges off willy nilly in search of adventure. Essentially, my college self. Then she became so easy to write.
