Goodreads asked Werner A. Lind:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Werner A. Lind Read avidly. Take a writing class if you can. Pay serious attention to grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and other mechanics of good writing. Write about what you know when you can, but research the background of unfamiliar topics and settings. Don't assume that your writing is great; get a couple (at least) of beta readers who know what makes for good writing and will give you honest feedback (not just proofreading, but about the substance of the writing). And when your novel or story is fully polished and ready to publish, don't give up trying to find a publisher (even though that's tempting in these days of easy self-publishing); it's worth your while to persevere until you find one!
