Goodreads asked Chris Solaas:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Chris Solaas Give it to God first. He'll give it back if He has called you to write it.

Don't be afraid to write.
Don't quit your day job. Certainly few make it as their vocation. But many make it their avocation, and some move into it as their primary source of income when sales support it.

When drafting, do NOT edit. Write whatever comes to you to write, and get the story completed.
Come back and edit. Clean it up, develop your characters, flesh out your scenes. Imagine it's a movie and you are watching the action. Cut out anything that doesn't add to the plot and flow, or jars the reader out of the 'movie'.

Leave questions unanswered! Your readers want to use their imagination, leave something to it. Remember that many things 'GWS' - Go Without Saying...

Do not publish (if you are self-publishing) until your book is something you would enjoy reading if you paid for it. Your readers eventually would be paying for it, don't make them regret their purchase.
