The books aren't related in any way, so you can read either one first, depending upon what you're in the mood to read. I read Uprooted first and loved it, and now I'm starting in on this series which has a completely different feel, but seems well written, too.

The choice is yours. Remember, people's reactions to books are widely differing and very subjective so the best is to try both and judge for yourself!
Heather
I loved Uprooted and thought this book was really lame. I say skip this if the rest are even worse.
Deana
Start with this one because it's excellent and each book after in the series declines progressively. I quit after the fourth which was so bad I just skimmed it to learn the plot. From Amazon reviews successive books in the series were even worse, which is hard to believe.
Karen
I loved every single one, but either one is fine for starting. I agree with Nozomi that Uprooted has a more modern feel.
Witch
The writing style is vastly different. Uprooted has a more modern writing style. The Temeraire series reads like older, English literature.
Cindi Jeter
Uprooted!!! The Dragon Books were a disappointment and I it's hard to comprehend they are written by the same author.
Danny Murphy
Uprooted is fabulous, and standalone
