I have read The Giver and see that the next 3 books are "companions" to it but not sequels with the same characters. Do they need to be read in order? I have access to The Messenger now, but not to Gathering Blue.

I would recommend reading them in publication order. However, it might be fun to read Gathering blue, Messenger, Giver, and then Son.
