Jo asked:

I have read The Giver and see that the next 3 books are "companions" to it but not sequels with the same characters. Do they need to be read in order? I have access to The Messenger now, but not to Gathering Blue.

Liam Murray Yes, sort of. You can read "The Giver" before "Gathering Blue" or vice versa; however, "Messenger" opens where "Gathering Blue" left off, and features characters from both "Gathering Blue" and "The Giver". Read "Son" last.
Amphitrite I read it out of order because I thought Son was the only sequel. It actually worked out better because Son kind of follows what happens after the events of The Giver because the main character came from the same place as Jonas. The main characters of Gathering Blue and Messenger come from a different town that has their own story but eventually starts to mingle with Jonas'
Annie Mac I read all of these helpful comments before deciding to wait for Gathering Blue to become available at the library--thanks to all. I'm glad I read them in order--I think they tie together better than way. However, I do think each book is strong enough to stand on its own.
Lievebloem The overall storyline makes more sense if you read all the books in the original order, and I would recommend it. And especially Gathering Blue and Messeger have a lot of connections.
Liz I would recommend reading them in publication order. However, it might be fun to read Gathering blue, Messenger, Giver, and then Son.
Unicorn Mania Well, I would say, read it in order.
Hannah They do relate to each other Gathering Blue doesn't really relate to The Giver, but they connect in Messenger so, I would read them in order
Salma You can read the Messenger before Gathering blue, but read Son last. At least read the Summary of Gathering Blue first. Personally, i would read it in the order though. Because the main character from Gathering Blue is in The messenger
