It's not for nothing that he's still single at his age.

He was charming in about the first three books, but ultimately becomes an ass fast. What a tool. And Sir Charles is right: Agatha is too good for him!

I couldn't stand him! And I hate that Agatha keeps chasing after him even though he treats her like crap. It's because of this "romance" thread that i stopped reading after the first 4 books. I'm hoping the author got tired of this push/pull irritating nonsense so I can resume but I don't think that happens. Does it?

He's a complete tool. This waffling back and forth is getting old fast, I don't care how attractive he is. The ending to this book made me SCREAM and I'm almost hoping it doesn't happen because Agatha can do better.

That's very true! He seems to only like her when she is acting like she doesn't like him, and he overreacts extremely when she even hints that she likes him.

James is obnoxious. Are we supposed to root for him? Really?!

Reminds me of Major Wilshaw, portrayed beautifully by Edward Fox, in the movie, A Month by the Lake. A wonderful movie and Wilshaw is a career British military officer. James gets put out by things in civilian life that differ from his career, plus his past history with an affair in Cypress also preys heavily on him. James also compares with Major Brendan Archer in the superb book Troubles by J.G. Farrell. It seems as if this is a popular portrayal of lifetime unmarried British military officers.
