Shaun asked Mark Lawrence:

Your protagonists seem to be manifestations of their own self-image, as if they create themselves in their own imaginations. Is this intentionally linked to the idea of a reality that responds to the will of the observer after turning the Wheel of Osheim? Some of the things they achieve seem to be products of just believing they can or have to. Is this the same kind of "magic" we see elsewhere?

Mark Lawrence It seems to me you've described a significant fraction of humanity there - especially when presented through their own viewpoint. Believing that you can do something is a big (often essential) part of actually doing it.

But, of course, the nature of the Broken Empire's world makes this considerably more true for its inhabitants.
