Miranda asked Jennifer A. Nielsen:

Where did you get the inspiration for Jaron?

Jennifer A. Nielsen This is almost identical from another question I'm answering today. For anyone who follows my answers, sorry for the duplication.

Sage came to me in a song by Eddie Vedder (lead singer for Pearl Jam) called “Guaranteed.” The lyrics said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” I loved those lines and the more I turned them in my head, the more Sage’s character became clear. And once I had Sage, I had the story.

You can look up the song wherever you listen to music and the more you think about the lyrics, the more you'll hear Sage in them. Same with "Rise," by Eddie Vedder, which is pretty much the entire point of the series.
