Goodreads asked Barbara Ross:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Barbara Ross It's so hard to know where ideas come from! The town I live in in Maine has a Windjammer's Day, and Busman's Harbor's Founder's Weekend is modeled somewhat on it. But the idea of a Founder's Day came from reading I did about clambakes, and how they can back into fashion in the early 20th century, along with Founder's Days and other celebrations of a simpler, more rural life that arose in response to industrialization and urbanization. Except among Native Americans in the coastal states and Canadian provinces, where clambakes were like backyard barbecues and never went out of fashion.
