Phyncke
Phyncke asked Yangsze Choo:

I am really enjoying the audible version of this book. Quite lovely. Was the idea for the Ghost Bride based on an actual Malay tradition or a literary creation from your imagination?

Yangsze Choo Hi Phyncke,

Thank you - I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying it! The custom of marrying the dead is a real, though somewhat rare Chinese tradition that still survives in pockets of overseas Chinese culture, e.g. Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc. I heard about it when I was younger and thought it was both bizarre and frightening (if you were the bride!). If you happen to have the printed version of The Ghost Bride, I've written notes at the end about this tradition, as well as other aspects of Chinese culture in colonial Malaya. And if you're interested in hearing the behind-the-scenes story about what it was like to narrate the audiobook, I wrote a post about it on my blog http://yschoo.com/2013/08/12/recordin... . Happy listening! :)
