I LOVE Helene and I hate that she's being subject to so much even after trying to save Elias! I don't like the interaction between Elias and and Laia, either, it's more lust than anything. And lastly, Keenan and Laia are an amazing fit--they can understand each other because of their similar pasts and Laia brings out a side of him that he doesn't show anyone else (much like Helene and Elias do for each other). And also, if Marcus lays a hand on Helene, I will come after him myself, I love Helene to death

I feel like putting them together would be too predicted because they were both fighting for the same team. But putting him with Laia adds more secrecy and mystery to the book because you don't know what is going to happen with them.

I just reread An Ember in the Ashes and honestly my viewpoint has kind of changed. I still like Helene as a character but I as much as I think so I don't think she and Elias will become a thing for multiple reasons. First, I think Elias has made it clear or is totally incompetent at handling Helene's feelings. While he does have some sort of reaction towards it it doesn't hold a candle to that enthralling lust/attraction he feels for Laia throughout the whole book. He's also hesitant on acting on his feelings towards Helene, which in comparison to his actions towards Laia who is a scholar girl that is his mother's slave kind of shows his attitude towards Helene. Secondly, and this isn't a very strong reason, the person falls in love with best friend trope is overrated for a reason. It's clear that Helene and Elias have a strong bond, they've seen each other at their weakest at unflattering, and I love that compared to Laia and Elias's somewhat insta love. However, that's also a kind of kink in their relationship and I think Elias knows that too. Third, I think Elias has hurt Helene too much. While Helene has also kept things from Elias, Elias has also betrayed Helene's trust and chosen to put another girl he's just met over this girl who's been his best friend for almost his entire life. Even as normal friends, that would be enough for me to be throughly pissed off. He promises that he'll keep Helene's powers a secret, yet the next minute he threatens to tell his mother about it if Helene goes off. You can feel the shock and hurt Helene might feel and I feel like that was a horrible move, even if it was for a good cause. Last, I think the two are just too different for this ship to ever sail. While I'm not denying that character change isn't possible, Helene and Elias totally disagree on fate and on treatment of Scholar's. They're both firm people and this is a strong matter and we've seen from their arguments that they won't come to peace over this issue.
I really love the concept of Helene and Elias and I love their " I have your back", "I understand you" but in terms of the actual people I really can't put them together, at least not yet. That being said, I don't ship Laia and Elias much either. It feels too much lust/instalove. I see comments that their relationship gets expanded on and I hope that happens.

There was that kind of chemistry in the first few chapters between Elias and Helene. But after that last chapter, I think Elias and Helene are more like brother and sister.

I haven't finished the sequel yet (I'm only a few chapters in), but so far, I am all about HELIAS. Laia/Elias just don't work as a romantic couple for me up to this point.

No, you're right. Just finished the second book and that "I miss you scene" alone was more romantic than any interaction between Elias and Laia. Also they have their past connecting them while IMO Elia's feelings for Laia genuinely came out of nowhere.

I’m super late to this conversation, but I just started reading the books. These ships in this book have me torn and frustrated. I feel like I always pick the ship that is not going to work out in books. And then I’m devastated! So I think that makes me look for the ship that will work out and try to ship that one so I can avoid the pain! But I really think Elias and Helene would be the better couple. They know each other so well, and love each other. Laia and Elias just feel like Insta love for no logical reason. I’m not finished with the series yet, so maybe it will make sense in the end, but right now halfway through book 3, I just don’t see what those two see in each other. I guess I can see how Laia cares for Elias, because he saved her in a lot of ways. But I don’t know why Elias would give up his beautiful smart, strong best friend for her! Then again, at this point Helene is my favorite character, and I think she deserves better than Elias. She deserves someone who will love her fully, but I think it was a wasted opportunity for the author not to make them the main couple, And it just doesn’t make sense. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I am assuming her love interest will be the brother. I guess that’s somewhat acceptable, and how the author was trying to make up for not making Elias her love interest, but I just want Helen to have a happy ending. It’s probably not Going to happen, is it?

I really love Helene's character, but I don't think she should be with Elias. However, I do agree that Keenan and Laia are a really good fit. I just finished this book today, but I think in future books there might be a love triangle between Keenan, Elias and Laia!

Yes! They feel much more natural, and I think the story would have been more enjoyable without the forced Elias/Laia thing going on. And more interesting if his motivations for helping her weren't partially because he he was suddenly interested in her.

But I feel like a lot of people are for Elias and Laia because they kind of resemble Zuko and Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and a lot of people including me got angry over how -SPOILER- Zutara didn’t happen.
