I usually give myself a crash-course in whatever I need over the course of a week--internet research, looking up what books I'll need. That's generally enough to get me stared, and then I continue reading those books I found while I'm writing my novel. Some subjects require I finish reading said books first, in which case it can take me a couple weeks to have enough research under my belt to start writing, or even plotting fully.

Hi, Ms. Roseanna! I've read your guestposts on GTW, and find them super helpful! I am working on writing a historical "romance" right now (It's a Jane Eyre type of story.) and I am having a bit of trouble finding a consistent voice for my heroine, also with fleshing out her flaws. (Her main flaw is lying) As a historical romance author, do you have any tips for finding the characters voices, and showing their flaws?
