Noah asked Mary Robinette Kowal:

As a sufferer of depression, I personally find that I have to carefully manage my alcohol consumption, and most of the time I simply don't keep any nearby. You've mentioned that you have symptoms of depression, so have you ever struggled with any sort of drinking issue? If so, any advice?

Mary Robinette Kowal I'm very fortunate and haven't had any drinking issues. In part this is because I had a speech impediment when I was a child and it comes back after about two drinks. It's a useful check. (Though my husband tells me that I'm the only one who can hear it.)

At home, despite having a robust single malt collection and being married to a vintner, we almost never drink unless we have company.

So, thank heavens, I haven't. That said, I'm aware that alcohol is a depressant so avoid it when I'm in a slump.
