Christine
Christine asked Mary Robinette Kowal:

If someone is interested in a career as a narrator, how would you recommend they begin? Education? Workshops? It's something I've been interested in for many years, but have no idea how to pursue it. Do you have any tips on things to avoid, or pitfalls? Or advice at all?

Mary Robinette Kowal I'd start by reading aloud to friends and family or by volunteering at the library, to make certain you actually like it. One of the things about narrating is that it's a full day of reading aloud, and often books that aren't your cup of tea. You have to like the process or it's torture.

If you have no theater background, it's worth taking some classes. Be aware though that the style of acting for audio books is often different from that for voice acting intended for animation or radio spots. Don't stress too much though, because frequently successful audiobook narrators don't have formal training.

Then look at the submission guidelines for audiobook producers. Create a reel to their specifications and send it in.

You can also get some practice in by narrating short fiction for podcasts, or by doing work for ACX. You won't make a living that way, but it's good for being certain you want to do this.
