Mary Robinette Kowal:
Do you make your own Regency underwear? What patterns do you use? What do you wish other costumers would do differently/better?
Mary Robinette Kowal
No. I bought my first set of short stays, chemise, and petticoat before I started sewing my Regency gowns. I've only needed the one set thus far. As a side note: Regency ladies didn't wear underpants because it was considered unfeminine to have anything between one's legs.
For the gowns themselves, I like the Sense and Sensibility "The Elegant Lady's Boudoir" and the La Mode Bagetelle patterns.
I'm not really a costume purist for other people. If someone is having fun, I think it's fairly dreadful to tell them that they aren't allowed to enjoy their hobby because they didn't use the right fabric or they used a machine or whatever.
That said... If you are going for *accuracy* in the Regency, avoid prints with full blown roses on them. The flower itself doesn't exist yet.

Mary Robinette Kowal:
I notice when I'm reading your Glamourist series that you manage to make what feels like a casual stroll through this world with Jane and Vincent (at least until the main conflict erupts) incredibly compelling. It's both relaxing and urgently demanding I get to the next page. So... How do you do that? Is it intentional?

First I just want to say thank you so much for Jane and Vincent, I love them. I am a public librarian and I have to admit I use my powers to always be the first to get your new book. If you could spend the day with any one of Jane Austen's heroines who would it be? Do you think Jane and Vincent would get along more with Elizabeth and Darcy or Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester?

Mary Robinette Kowal:
I think the random references in your Glamourist History books are great. I've so far caught Melody claiming one does not simply walk into Murano, the word inconceivable not meaning what you think it means, and the phrase "constant vigilance." I see from your other answers that I've managed to miss all of the Doctor's appearances, however. What other gems did I miss?
