Please explain how our species devolved in less than 2000 years into creatures described as "abbies." And, maybe I missed it, but what exactly caused our total extinction in less than 2000 years?

Genetic engineering run amok is what the TV series based on the books explained. Science could certainly accelerate the natural process I would think.
