Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is amazing and well worth the read or listen. Audible’s is a good listen. For insights into the mind and evolution of totalitarianism, no one beats Hannah Arendt.
And Shirer’s Diaries give a first hand view of Germany before the war. He was kicked out once US was at war...of course.

I highly recommend "The Guns of August" as a great read about the beginning of the war.

Start with Rise & Fall. Also Berlin Diary by same author. He lived and reported both.

Be sure to also read the trilogy of WW2 by Rick Atkinson starting with his book ( he won a pulizer for) Army at Dawn. You will never see this part of our History the same. His books read like a novel. Once started impossible to put down. Enjoy. Wish I was reading them for the first time again.

As it was written by a journalist who spent time in Germany in the years before the war, it has a contemporary quality. It isn't the most comprehensive on the subject, (not to say it doesn't cover a lot of ground- it certainly does!) but Shirer wasn't writing sixty years after the event. It's a very good place to start!

Same, I spent a fair amount of time in Nazi Germany, although I don't see why everyone says that the Nazis were bad?!?!
