Hi, Susan, I have read and love both series. Melanie made a good point about the different types of heroines (Mercy being your prototype kick-ass heroine, and Anna Latham being the helpless heroine who needs to be rescued).
Another big difference, in my opinion, is that Alpha & Omega is more of what I would call paranormal romance, with romance being a big part of the picture. The pace of the romance moves very slowly in the Mercy Thompson books, which I consider to be more urban-fantasy/action/adventure with some romance. I was a little frustrated with how long it was taking the romance to get off the ground, but the plot and adventure was so great, it kept me engaged.

I think I've read everything Patricia Briggs has written, including this series and the Mercy Thompson one. I like both series, though I think I may like Alpha & Omega a little more. It depends on what you like. A&O is more romance-centered than Mercy Thompson, but it still has a lot of action and mystery to it. A&O also gives more depth to the world as it spends a lot of up-close-and-personal time with fae and witches; you get a lot in Mercy's series, but I think it gives even more in this one.
The main complaint I've heard about A&O series is that they don't care for the heroine. When the series starts out, she's been abused and tortured by her packmates, so she's very insecure and frightened.

I have read both series. Both are very good but different types of characters and storylines. Not everyone will like both series. You can only make up your own mind.
