Deena Ohana
Deena Ohana asked Mary Doria Russell:

What do you find about the Midwest that you can use in your writing? Do you like the way people talk and interact in the Midwest?

Mary Doria Russell This might be the hardest question anybody has asked me in 20 years! I had to think about it a while, and concluded that to me, the Midwest is like water is to a fish. I'm so a part of this region (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland) that I can't really define its characteristic speech patterns or behavior! I know that I'm instantly aware of differences in dialect and prosody when I leave home. Assumptions and attitudes on the coasts and the south and the mountain west jump out at me. But at home? I'm far less aware, I guess.
