Nicole asked Tracy Tappan:

Hey! Love the series and can't wait to read more....I sometimes get confused when reading between the Dragon and Fey....The Fey have dragons on their backs? Are the dragons a type of fey? Are Toni and Alex royal fey or royal dragons or both? Maybe its just me but I get really confused when I think about it....any clarification you could give would be really helpful! Thanks so much :)

Tracy Tappan Hi Nicole, Sorry for the confusion! So glad you asked. Yes, anyone with Dragon bloodlines has a dragon tattoo on his or her back. For a Mixed-blood Varcolac (which is a mix of Varcolac genes and Dragon genes), the dragon tattoo is in its full form: colorful and made of living scales. A Dragon human only has a small piece of this tattoo (usually a foot or a slice of wing or the tip of a nose) and it will be brown in color--like a birthmark. IF the Dragon person has the ability to perform enchantments, then they are ALSO Fey. And so far in the series, I have it that only Royal Fey can have enchantment abilities--so Fey is pretty much Royal Fey. And, yes, you can't be Fey without owning the Dragon gene.
So when you say Alex and Toni are Royal Fey, that would be interchangeable with saying they are Royal Fey Dragons.
Enchantment abilities are suppressed until the person with the Royal Fey gene is bitten by a Varcolac and gets loaded up with the Fiinta elixir. This brings out their enchantment skill, as it did with Alex (Soothsayer), Pandra (Fifth Element), and Toni (power like her father's)...Faith and Kacie Teague are also Royals with enchantment skills, but I haven't gotten to that yet in the series.
When a Royal obtains his or her Fey enchantment through Fiinta, the brown dragon pieces on his or her back also transform into a full, colorful, scaly dragon. The colors of the Royal Fey Dragon are blue and red (plus there is a symbol that is an enchantment designator). The colors of the regular, everyday dragon are green and red (ONLY seen on a Mixed-blood Varcolac).
Was this too much information, haha? I hope that helped, but ask again if you need more clarification.
So glad you're loving the series. :o)
