Jane asked Susan Wittig Albert:

I'm reading _An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days_, July 7 entry about the bartender getting stung about selling to minors - wonder if the jury thought the barkeep was charged because he didn't pay off the police. Thoughts?

Susan Wittig Albert Jane, it's been a while. But as I recall, that didn't come up. The jurors were pretty indignant about the cops using minors in a sting operation. Sometime later, that practice was ended. Also, most of us had been in that bar and remembered how chaotic it was--we felt some sympathy toward that bartender, who was trying to do a job in a difficult situation. He should have been warned, not arrested. Thanks for the question!
