Honestly a few years ago I would have said no they shouldn't read this. But now my answer is yes. Twelve year olds know so much more now about these topics than years before. And yet we still don't talk about it with them. I think this book is a good way to approach those topics. It does have mature themes, but they aren't graphic. And its REAL. That's what I loved about this book. Kids today deal with these things and for them to be able to read about it is a great thing.

I would not suggest having a 12 yr old read this book. It is about a girl in her freshman year of high school. The story isn't written for a small child.
However, if the 12 yr old in question has a similar story to Melinda I would in that particular instance say it *might* be an appropriate read for someone so young. I would absolutely leave it up the the parent's discretion.

YES definitely read it. There is some mature content, but nevertheless, SPEAK is a novel that should be read by everyone at some point, even as a 12 year old.

if can you take 'bad' scenes, then I think a twelve year old can read it. but, you should probably wait until your thirteen.
