I haven't read Sweet Thursday or Cannery Row. Should I read them in order (Cannery Row and then Sweet Thursday) or does it matter?

Primero Fin YOU MUST READ CANNERY ROW FIRST!!!
Charlie Miksicek I'll offer a counter opinion. I think Sweet Thursday stands on it's own. The Nick Nolte - Debra Winger movie "Cannery Row" was mostly "Sweet Thursday" anyway. The "purists" who suggest Cannery Row first should also add The Sea of Cortez, and The Logbook from the Sea Cortez to get a full picture of the "Doc". I had the privilege of actually getting to visit his lab in Monterey. Doc and Steinbeck's spirits were everywhere, as were the spirits of other great writers, cartoonists, artists, and musicians who used his lab later as a "Bohemian Salon and Social Club". Doc's lab is now part of the Monterey City Museums system and you can actually get tours https://www.monterey.org/museums/City...
Bozhana Petkova-Carrillo You should definitely read Cannery Row first, because they are connected and you meet the characters.Cannery Raw is where everything starts and Sweet Thursday tells a story of several years later.
Sharon McNeil I would recommend reading Cannery Row first. Sweet Thursday is a continuation of Cannery Row and is delightful!!!
Christopher Read Cannery Row first, or you will be a little bored and lost.
Patricia Hamill Well, I just read this and haven't read Cannery Row yet.

The start of this book was a bit lost on me because it starts off with the "where are they now" stuff. But, that being said, once it got to the plot, I found all that didn't matter. I love this book. I do think I probably should have read the first one first, though.
Stephanie Please yes read them in order!
Bill Jenkins I would read this book first actually. I read Cannery Row first and didn't like it. I think reading this would allow you to appreciate Cannery Row better.
Jack Definitely, Cannery Row first.
