Kresley Cole has strong female leads with just the right amount of humor, heat and plot twists in her Immortals After Dark series.
Also, Karen Marie Moning in her Fever Series (this series got me hooked on PNR)- has a bad-ass protagonist heroine/lead, and an incredible UF-type plot line with some mystery and world building, while still retaining a good dose of romance (and heat) and an ultra hot alpha-male type romantic interest. The Fever series' plot is so engaging and interesting that I was reading it for the sake of storyline over the romance, which for me, is saying something because I'm not a huge fan of UF in itself.

I agree with Courage Knight! Patricia Briggs is awesome! You could give Women of the Otherworld of Kelley Armstrong a try too. Also ... Kim Harrison with The Hollows, Eve Silver with Otherkin

If you like Jeaniene Frost, then you'll LOVE Patricia Briggs. Patricia does for werewolves what Jeaniene does with vampires. I was NOT fond of the Christine Feehan vampire books. If you read one, you read them all. The plots were very formulaic and repetitive.
