(i'm asking because in another book series, (dragon kin series by g.a. aiken) one of the sisters had hers told as a side-story in several books.)

Your characters are so vibrant, real, and distinctive. A lot of writers eventually repeat personalities, but you don't. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Are the characters alive while you're writing them?
