I loved, loved, loved devil in the white city almost as much as I love Chicago. What in the world drew you to major in Russian history? What is your craziest international incident? Mine was being attacked by a bat in my hotel room in Tianjin, China. I'm convinced bats can see.

Erik Larson Regarding Russian history: The answer is easy. I had an amazing professor, who totally turned me on to history. The guy was, in fact, an exiled Russian prince. And his lectures were rich and, frankly, hysterical.

I read your response to the question about structuring your narrative and I have slightly different question. From reading THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY and THUNDERSTRUCK, I take it that you leave it up to the reader to make sort out the juxtaposition of good and evil and, more significantly, the implications. My question is which motivates you most in putting the narrative together, the evil or the good?
