What an interesting question! I've never thought of my writing that way. I'll tell you the first thing that popped into my mind: incest. But now, a few minutes later, I realize that there are many things I don't or won't write about. Just yesterday four lawyers -- all fans -- wrote to me about the first Chinese- American lawyer, saying I should write about him. It's an interesting story, but not all that interesting to me. That kind of thing happens all the time. So to answer your question more broadly, I'd say there's lots and lots of stuff I won't write about. The proof? I've written only nine books.

Dear Lisa - I have only just found the Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. I am mesmerised. I have been fascinated with the ethnic minority groups in the Golden Triangle area since visiting N Thailand and Kunming in 1989. How did you find out so much about the Akha to write such a detailed account? Do you find that publishers are open to these stories? I find them closed minded to such a story especially in this time period

Have you ever felt difficult finding your own identity in mixed environment (american vs. chinese)? I am half indian, half finnish and facing this kind of puzzle. I enjoy your books, especially Shangai Girls where chinese sisters moved to America and settled down there and less or more found their place there. And for last question, have you ever studied history in university or you study everything on your own?

Some 20 years ago, I lived and worked in Fukuoka, Japan. There was lots of excitement about the 'King of Na gold seal' (more information here: http://www.digplanet.com/wiki/King_of_Na_gold_seal). I visited the excavation site and was moved by the mystery of the place and of the seal, engraved with 漢委奴國王. I wonder if you would ever consider writing a tale touching on this Han dynasty mystery?
