How did you choose the names for your characters?

Becky Albertalli I think, in most cases, the names just came to me! A lot of them are names that I've always loved, but couldn't use for my kids. Simon was actually a name we considered using for my older son, but my husband didn't love it quite enough (I DID). Simon's last name is quite possibly a tribute to my favorite member of the Babysitter's Club. This isn't mentioned in the book, but Simon's middle name is Irvin - named after my favorite psychiatrist/psychotherapist, Irvin Yalom. :-)

When I read the line "I'm just so sick of straight people who can't get their shit together" Simon became my favourite book of 2015! It just resonated with me in such an unexpected way! My question is: As a writer, how do you write from the POV of a character that is different from you? How do you make sure your characters don't stray into stereotype territory? (I hope this question makes sense)
