A Goodreads user asked Becky Albertalli:

When I read the line "I'm just so sick of straight people who can't get their shit together" Simon became my favourite book of 2015! It just resonated with me in such an unexpected way! My question is: As a writer, how do you write from the POV of a character that is different from you? How do you make sure your characters don't stray into stereotype territory? (I hope this question makes sense)

Becky Albertalli Oh, I'm so glad this resonated - thank you so much! Your question makes perfect sense, and I think authors tend to approach this issue in a number of different ways. For me, I think it's a combination of research, checking in with community members from the group you're writing about, and being open to feedback.

That being said, Simon's actually very similar to me in a lot of ways!
