Les Mackenzie asked Ann Leckie:

I really like how you play with perspective. Did you get a lot of push back from publishers of editors during your first draft? Did you find it hard to write from the perspective of Justice of Toren when you realized you wanted the ship to have multiple segments?

Ann Leckie So, publishers and editors never saw my first draft! It was a first novel, so I spent a long time revising and polishing before I started even querying agents.

I had no pushback whatever on the POV. And yeah, I actually delayed starting on the novel for several years--I had the idea, realized it needed to be in first person from the point of view of a character with many different bodies, couldn't see how I could possibly do that, and so I pushed it back and worked on other things. Once I figured out how to do it, I began in earnest. It was scary, though, until I realized it did seem to be working!
