As a Jew, I wanted to write about why Jews are hated. When I started to write, I thought about the book I'm now writing (set in Germany and Poland during the Nazi years) but I thought it was beyond my skills. I went back in history to a less complicated era and wrote The Heretic. Many years later, I have returned to that first objective. My family comes from both Poland (my mother's side) and Germany (my father's side) so I think it was natural to develop fictional characters from both countries, and to consider the horrible history from perspectives in both countries.
