I think the author forgot to finish the book.

*Spoiler alert* I really liked the ending...This is how I understand it: Nina sets Emma up numerous times but always comes to 'save' her from whatever evil she's thrown at her.
Orchestrating the pool incident is just another horrible thing where Nina can come to the rescue again whilst ruining Emma's life bit by bit.
Emma, who is lovely and ordinary, is basically trapped in this never ending cycle of 'owing' Nina forever. They've become co-dependent in a really messed up way. I don't really believe that the child drowns, Nina just wants to punish her victim. I think we just have to assume that their sinister dynamic will keep going on and on and on...That's how I see it anyway!

In the last few paragraphs, it seems to me that Emma is beginning to remember some of the things in the back of her mind. The bracelet, the comb through the dirty hair and the tossing of the salad with a woman's hands are coming into focus, while she is running to get her son, who was most likely enticed into the pool by Nina.

I'm not certain that this ending was worth thinking about. Emma should have suspected more & Nina seemed mentally ill,

Nina is obsessed with Emma and wanting to make her 'pay' for a variety of perceived slights. In the ending Emma alludes to the fact that she always feel like she doesn't deserve the good things that have happened to her, that the other shoe was going to drop. Nina's ultimate revenge is to have "accidentally" left the pool gate ajar and either encouraged/coaxed Christopher there so that he would drown. Therefore, exacting her revenge for Emma's slights and confirming her fears. You don't know whether Emma saves Christopher or not.

It's called an open ended ending. The reader decides what happened.

I would really like to know what happened to Christopher and what Emma's reaction was when she found out who Nina was and what she was really doing - it is what I was waiting for the entire book. However, having said this it is a thrill not knowing! - I am finding myself re-reading the end as I feel like I have missed a major part - check my review here - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I think Nina was still jealous of Emma and angry that Emma still considered herself lucky even though Nina thinks Emma life is pretty pathetic. The fact that Emma feels fortunate to have her life and does not seem to envy Nina seems to drive Nina mad and she needs to get her revenge.
