Does this book stand alone in the series? I'm interested in reading it because its a Newbery winner, but not inclined to read four other books first if this one stands alone well.

A lot happens that kind of sets the stage for the action of book 5, and you get to know Taran much better in that one as well. But as the others have said you can read it on its own. The books aren't that long, so it's not going to be as time-consuming to read several books as it would be with many other series. (less)
