Isn't this the plot of the movie "The Last Starfighter"?

Brandon Ronk Last Starfighter and Ender's Game had a baby named Armada. It's very good.
Norana And The Lion King was just a retelling of Hamlet. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie....
Matt The funny thing is that the book is a subtle attack on this question itself. Starfighter is referred to about 100 times in the first few chapters. People who ask this question will be embarrassed they did once they read the book. No this isn't the plot of the movie The Last Starfighter, but it's similar - to that and about 6 other sci-fi books and movies. And that's a good thing. Read the book. It should only take you a night or two.

It's a pop culture sci-fi book so yes movies like The Last Starfighter come up. Obviously.
Zach Lightman has seen the movies we've seen and played the games we've played.
B. Reese It's Ernest Cline, so it's probably his Last Starfighter fanfiction mixed in with a number of other similar obscure references and with himself as the Gary Stu.
Marcus I think that's the part they described as, "Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little…familiar?" Perhaps he's breaking the fourth wall like Scalzi did in Red Shirts?
Casey Baker That question is explained in the book, and the similarity is purely intentional and furthers the subtext of the plot.
Mack I was thinking Ender's Game.
Dustin It is a mix of The Last Starfighter & Ender's Game. I'm enjoying the story so far.
Rodolfo Schmauk Mostly. Coupled with Ender's Game. It started as a homage, but it became a pastiche.
Michael Feeney Without spoiling anything, that's sort of the idea. The novel is playing with a few ideas and that's all I'll say...
André Motta The Last Starfighter... where the boy fights the Kodan ARMADA? Yeah... seems like it ;)
Sarah Bramble it references the last starfighter
Jason For those of us that grew up in the 80's... I agree, "The Last Starfighter"
Dr. T Loves Books Well, it's sure not an original story... I had a major problem with the fact that this story just basically says within itself, "Yeah, this is what happened in these other stories. Not even going to change it much."
Kendall Moore To defend the Frontier against Zur and the Kodan Armada.
James It a good book
The only thing I would say about it ,
It feel so much like has last book

Now to the point that it like
1) Ender Game
2) the last StarFighter
3) Star Wars (to a point ) Luke
4) Capt Kirk (Again to a point ) (the New darker movies)
5) City of Bone

I am sure if we where to think about this book !
Many movies , Books or TV shows (would have the same feel

We could find many more Character and story line that are close to this
Both in scifi and Fantasy

something a friend has said to me in the past
there are only so many plots to be use in writing
Sam Huxtable No. The plot of the last starfighter is actually very different. Not many key elements are even the same.
Chris You're all correct. I saw Cline give a talk in Seattle. He gave credit to Last Starfighter, Ender's Game, War Games, and about 20 other sources.
Mike Yes and no. Yes, it talks about TLS, but in the sense that a book set in this century might talk about current US presidents. It's used somewhat to set the plot up. It also refers to other modern and not so modern SF movies in the same way. But I wouldn't regard it as a derivative work of TLS.
Aaron Farris I was thinking the ending was similar to a South Park episode. Season 13 Episode 9.
John Huntington Guess you didn't read the book are you can't understand the difference
James Rhodes No, the plot draws on many established plots but the protagonist is aware of those plots and they are used to supplement the main plot.
Denise Classic. Now I have to go watch it again. Yeah, perspective.
Jon Bonnell Was just getting ready to ask the same thing.
Timothy Dalton Hahahaha, wow. I just saw your question after I asked the exact same one.
