asked:
Hi! Is this meant to be a YA novel? I saw some people had shelved it that way, but I'm reading it now, and the YA label is throwing me off a bit

I know this is late to the party, but Schwab answered this on her Twitter, so I thought I'd add that here. She said that you can tell based on the way her name is listed on the book. Victoria Schwab=YA, V.E. Schwab=Adult :)

This is a year too late, but there's been a kind of new age group/audience classification up and coming into light over the past few years called "New Adult", which is basically a novel written in sort of the style/feel of YA, but the main characters themselves are slightly older than teens and it may or may not have a few more adult themes. This is where I would classify this novel as it is neither quite all YA or all AF.

NPR takes the adult book side:

No, it's adult fantasy. I'm thinking it's being shelved as YA by readers of the author's previous YA novels.

Hey Katie! Great question. One of my favorite YA authors once said that YA is an audience, not a genre, so I totally get your confusion. Regardless of that, this is me being completely and totally jealous of your advanced copy:

I really hope it's excellent. I've been a fan of Schwab's for a few years now.

The main characters are 19/20 and the writing isn't particularly complex so I'm really questioning the classification as Adult Fiction.

Its an adult Novel but even if it was YA do not let it put you off. A good book is a good book and labels matter not a jot.
A quick fun, tightly plotted book with pace can be just as much fun as a worth purple prose filled 'classic'. Both should have a place in our world.

After reading all of adult her books so far, I feel like V.E. Schwab books are adult books geared towards a YA audience. I haven't read any of her Victoria Schwab books yet, but will with This Savage Song. Hope that makes sense!

Publishers change the label on books all the time. They're also marketed differently in different countries/regions. We send title corrections to publishers all the time from my store to have titles switched to different shelf locations.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't pay too much attention to the label.

I’ve been finding her books are either YA or NA, no matter how her name comes up. There are too many flaws a mature adult can catch that a YA or NA reader would skip over. E.g., all of her uneducated lower-class characters all speak with excellent English, a girl with no experience with boys, let alone men, just melds into an intimate relationship without a blip, an isolated village thrives without the mention of any kind of industry, the main character has no chores and doesn’t contribute to her home, which just wouldn’t happen. Things that catch a mature adult’s attention.

I guess Ya or Na depends on the romance idk....

does anyone know if my younger sister (age 13, loves fantasy, can't handle zombies or super scary stuff, but really likes violent books) can read this?

I hope there will be edition in Indonesian soon ^_^

Well any story that contains person or as a main character who are in an age where they are near adulthood could be considered as a ya novel
