Donna asked Mark Lawrence:

Hi Mark. I waited for someone else to ask this question for a long time, and am finally doing it myself because I really am curious. To me, the Broken Empire and the Red Queen’s War feel very different in tone to your other work. They’re so darkly humorous and your other series so serious. Am I wrong? Do you take the world more seriously now? Or is it more about the readers and what is successful?

Mark Lawrence I don't think taking the world seriously and writing humour are mutually exclusive. I'm probably more relaxed and light-hearted now than I was 10 or 20 years ago :)

And The Broken Empire was by a significant margin my most successful trilogy - so if I wanted to chase success, I would do more of that.

The true answer is that I like to try different things and write different characters.
