What an odd question. I don't think you can have read my stories yet.
The short answer is No. More specifically, I do not write stories to explore issues, especially contemporary aka ephemeral ones. I write to explore characters. Various readers, at various times, have read their social or political concerns into the tales, variously; but this is more a measure of the reader than the story. (Studying reader responses to the same story over, say, four 10-year intervals will illustrate this nicely. For especial interest, reduce the variable array by one more and look at the same reader's readings over 4 decades.)

For years I kept a journal and added quotes from your books that resonated with me. I don't know which book two came from: #2 - This one has been almost a mantra for me … and one of the reasons I started a Ph.D. in 2000 at age 50. Miles’ mother: "I want something(s) to look forward to so the decaying body is ignored in the excitement of the other.” Is that right? (First showed up in one of my journals before 2001.

I read one of your interviews on LJ (Karen Miller, 2007). In it you mentioned a 6 week study tour of Africa. What was that like? Have you written more about that trip somewhere? Do you still have any of those picture slides you took? You also mentioned hitchhiking in Europe! What countries? I'd love to hear more if you ever feel like talking about these adventures. ^^ -Kalli
