I'm sorry I haven't read Under Magnolia yet, but would you answer questions about Under the Tuscan Sun? Did your remodeling project in Under the Tuscan Sun turn out to your satisfaction? Are you still living there? How did you learn to speak Italian? How did you select Tuscany?

The remodeling was so long ago that now we are remodeling again. See francesmayesbooks.com for some photos on my blog. The work, then and now, is superb and we love the results. We spend 4-5 months a year at Bramasole and still are enamored with Tuscany. Learning the language is an on-going project. We've taken classes from time to time but mainly have learned by interacting. Tuscany was always an obvious choice for me--I fell hard for Italy the first time I went there on a vacation to see the art. I stayed for the people and the way of life.

The enormous magnolia grandiflora in my yard demands attention nine months of the year. I could save a lot of work by cutting it down; but I love the flowers - big as dinner plates and better than air freshener - too much! You divide the year between Cortona and North Carolina to get the best seasons in both. Do you write in both locales, or gather material in Cortona and write about it in North Carolina?
